A tremendously greatly red eye, what is this?

This is for my mother. She suddenly woke up this one morning and her right eye is totally red and looks to me a bit swollen. It is not the regular 'red eye', but it looks as if a blood vessel had just poped and blood has taken over where on earth the white portion of the eye is. She went to the Dr., but he just said she needs more sleep. I don't know if I should believe him. Can anyone notify me what is happening? And, how to cure it?
Answers:    If it popped, just wait a couple of days and it'll turn away.
