[Medical Question] Confused on the subject of the stages of lung cancer...?

A patient is diagnosed with an apical right upper lobe non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). It is considered treatable by surgery and a pneumonectomy is performed. However, a few weeks subsequent, he notices a lump in his (R) axilla, which is proven by biopsy to be NSCLC.
my question: on the subject of this patient's TNM stage, does an enlarged ipsilateral axillary node count as N1 or M1. I ask because the difference has an impact on the stage of the cancer, thus impacting their management plan.
Answers:    Axillary nodes are not regional to the lung they are distant nodes making it an M1. Source(s): I am a cancer registrar. I stage cancer for a living.
N1

* T describes how far the main (primary) tumor have grown into the wall of the intestine and whether it has grown into nearby areas.

* M indicates whether the cancer have spread (metastasized) to other organs of the body. (Colorectal cancer can spread almost anywhere in the body, but the most common sites of spread are the liver and lungs.)
