i heard it could. and i do that all the time.

No but people worry because apparently the plastic can leach out into the hose down, which you then drink. So they say you should buy an actual water bottle which is made of better plastic. There are some plastics that are silly say for baby bottles etc.
if they were set to cause cancer then it is safe to articulate they would be banned or have clear warnings. Like cigarette pack, sun beds etc.
