The ordinary function of lymph nodes is to filter the filtration system we have throughout our body. The lymphatic system can be compared to a pool which bathes our bodies in a clear fluid call lymph. The lymph nodes exist throughout our bodies in clusters as miniature pool filters. Generally the system works well, and clusters of lymph nodes enlarge as they are working to clear any viral or bacterial infections from a region. Eventually, these nodes should return to normal size.
In cancer though, these can inadvertently act as a superhighway for cancer spread, and so physicians monitor the lymph nodes in and around the cancer, and any metastasis (spread) to echelon the cancer, and restrict its further passage. Sometimes, selecting lymph nodes near a cancer are removed completely to prevent spread. When this happen, the person may have swelling from the region, because they no longer have an intact make friends with which to filter lymphatic fluid. Lymphatic fluid which circulates through the lymphatic system is a clear fluid which is rich with the white blood cells skilled of destroying or ingesting microscopic hazards.

The most common cause of swollen lymph nodes is when there is some sort of infection contained by the body. Sometimes these infections can be mild and do not cause significant symptoms.
