What exactly is chemotherapy?

Alright i know what chemo does...but what exactly is it? how do they get it into a patient?
Answers:    Chemotherapy I read was discovered during World War 2 as a mustard gas. I then looked up more information on it and found this:
t;History of chemotherapy"

The first drug used for cancer chemotherapy did not start out as a medicine. Mustard gas be used as a chemical warfare agent during World War I and was studied further during World War II. During a military operation in World War II, a group of people be accidentally exposed to mustard gas and were later found to have incredibly low white blood cell counts. Doctors reasoned that an agent that damaged the rapidly growing white blood cells might enjoy a similar effect on cancer. Therefore, in the 1940s, several patients with advanced lymphomas (cancers of certain white blood cells) be given the drug by vein, rather than by breathing the irritating gas. Their improvement, although stopgap, was remarkable. That experience led researchers to look for other substances that might have similar effects against cancer. As a result, frequent other drugs have been developed. Source(s): Source: WWW
There are different types of Chemo but the main component or results are for equal reason. Chemo is usually given IV and it is a type of poison to kill the cancer cells but not the forgiving. This is why they loose their hair. Now they have a type of chemo where a merciful doesn't have to loose the hair, however, it's not for all types of cancer. The type of chemo depends of the type of cancer and the severity of it. This determines what helpful the patient will have. It all comes down to one article, kill the cancer and it's a poison chemically altered not to kill the patient. Hope that help. Source(s): RN Breast cancer survivor
