My son was seven when he was Dx next to type 1 and his was brought on or "activated" by a really harsh bout with the flu. My father-in-law (who is no genitic relation to my son since my husband be adopted), was Dx with type 2 10 years ago and he has other been active and has never have a scrap of fat on him.
