High blood pressure is very serious and you should never come off tablets without your doctor's counsel.

When you say they don't work, what do you mean? are they not lowering the blood pressure or are they causing unwanted side effects?
uld detail all the major drugs I am aware of if you want, there is an unproblematic way to remember them:

- A is for alpha-adrenoreceptor blokers and ACE inhibitiors
- B is for beta blockers
is for diuretics (usually loop diruetics).

Remember however, that your clinicains know what is best for your dad. If it is not responding to normal treatment mention hyperadosteronism, phaechromocytoma, renal disease (stenosis of the renal artery) and coarcation of the aorta. Some drugs can also bring hypertension (NSAIDs and steroids).

Good Luck
In addition to the other great responses, I agree that hypertension can be a result: not a cause. Another words, if your dad has kidney problems, you kidneys will increase his BP to increase circulation to them. It is sometimes combined next to diabetes, etc. This degree of hypertension is life threatening and needs to be controlled in half a shake. A stroke or heart attack could occur leaving him helpless. Through multiple trials, and careful detective work to determine the motivation of his hypertension, his problem should be able to be solved. Don't give up. Good luck.
Hypertension/Blood Pressure is very serious one you should not clutch any medications unless the doctor prescribes you. Consult your doctor after he prescribes if you want to know more details of the medications then yuo can visit International Drug Mart
if your Dad's BP is running that high he REALLY wants on medication. The Doctors had trouble keeping mine down (it was 180/120) and they had tried me on tons of BP pills. Every 2-3 weeks they be trying something new and nothing worked so I went to a different Dr and talk to him about my blood pressure. He put me on Hyzaar about 8 or 9 years ago and I have be on it every since. My neighbor kept having trouble with her BP and was going on for to lose her job when we talked and I found out she was drinking 12 can of diet soda (pop) which is loaded with sodium (salt) once she stopped that pop and got a sodium free kind her BP come down in a week and she went back to work. It is possible something your Dad is ingestion or drinking is loaded with sodium and that is what is keeping his BP up. Read labels for out of sight salt and with a BP that high he should avoid adjectives salt completely and lay off caffeine as well until his BP is underneath control. This is serious.
