After my heart operation?
I am 17 and having a pacemaker fitted in a week. How long will it take me to get better enough so that I can start going to school and work (McDonalds) again?
Answers: Hello! I had a pacemaker implanted roughly a year and a half ago.
should be able to return to school inside two weeks, if not sooner. You will probably have to stay off of work for 4-6 weeks, depending on your doctor.
You will not be allowed to pull your arm above shoulder level for the first few weeks, so that the leads will have time to anchor to your heart. You will also not know how to lift anything over 5-10 pounds for the first few weeks either. Your doctor will give you hugely specific instructions...follow them as directed, and you will be back to normal in no time!

I've also had a pacemaker placement. The doctor will supply you all the instructions you'll need to know; but be prepared to ask questions more or less anything you don't understand. Make sur eto follow the instructions to the letter, and to keep any follow-up appointments beside your doctor. Also, some written material from the pacemaker manufacturer will be given to you. It has tons of excellent information you must know, so read it. You'll be given a provisional pacemaker ID card after your surgery. The pacemaker manufacturer will mail you the permanent card which should be carried next to you at all times.
The surgical incision takes a couple of weeks to heal completely; but you might be out of work for in the order of 6 weeks since there are movement limitations which must be followed for at least that amount of time.
