Hi,

There are lots of things that could enjoy caused this pain, and while it sounds potentially serious and he should definitely see his doctor in the region of to be sure, its important to understand that for his age we'd normally find it unlikely that he's suffering cardiac distress. Without knowing more nearly his current state of health or risk factors (smoker, overweight / obese, fatty diet, low fruit/vegetables, excessive alcohol consumption, family history, among other things) unsurprisingly I'm only guessing, and can't offer you any guarantees - if concerned, he should definitely consult his doctor.
ocabulary of heart pain, the immediate (and most concerning) possibility is that his heart isn't receiving satisfactory oxygen. This is usually called by a condition Atherosclerosis, where fatty deposits over a lifetime build up in blood vessel, and damage them, forming clots which stop blood supply. It would be unusual to see atherosclerosis in a young individual, even if they had an unhealthy lifestyle.

The danger signs of ischaemic heart disease would include twinge that travels to his neck or left arm, a crushing or clenching sensation, sweating, shortness of breath.

If the pain is more like a burning sensation, or experienced before/after meals, it could simply be reflux / heart burn...bitter moving from the stomach to the oesophagus. Sometimes antacids like mylanta will relieve this.

If the pain is sharp, stabbing pain, its relatively likely to be related to skeletal muscle. Our brain isn't very good at detecting stomach-ache from our organs, so if they hurt, it tends to be a vague, diffuse sensation. Very location-specific, sharp pains are usually due to skeletal muscles (rather than heart muscle). The other possibility is a pleural infection, which is an infection of the lining of his lungs; this type of throbbing will also be sharp, and be worse on inspiration / expiration.
