Can anyone please explain to me what Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT) is. My 16 year aged is individual tested?

Answers:     I yearning i could help you babe....it seems like you enjoy some good and knowledgeable people that enjoy answered your question so hopefully you have found the answers you were looking for. xx
a thumb up to the doc up in attendance.....he may be a pretend doc, but he knows his stuff!
Supraventricular Tachycardia basically means that an electrical impulse is originate from above the ventricles (as opposed to an abnormal beat generate by the ventricles themselves) and is telling the heart to beat very speedily - up to 300 beats per minute or so. It causes breathlessness due to the higher oxygen requirement of the heart spanking so quickly, and dizziness, because the heart beating very swiftly can't sustain a normal blood pressure usually.
Some other things that may work during an episode is putting very COLD water on her facade, or blowing really hard like blowing up a balloon. These things can be tried on the way to hospital and sometimes work.
If that doesn't work, she will inevitability intravenous medication, occasionally we cardiovert people when medication fails (using a defibrillator)
She may need ongoing medication, and she should avoid stimulants resembling caffeine too which can trigger episodes.
t problem, just a process of elimination.
Hello,

It is a condition which is easily treatable.

It is smoothly treated and really is not as scary as it sounds.

If you are aware when your daughter is having runs of SVT (catching her breath, lightheaded, dizzy) you can try to stop it by getting her to cough really hard, a big not easy cough straight from the chest, alternatively sucking an ice cube can work. There are other methods of stopping but you really need to be medically trained for that as these first aid methods need to be done without doubt correctly. In both of the methods I have told you about it is the shock to the system which can get the heart hindmost into a normal rhythm.
ou would like me to go into detail and explain fully everything you want to know surrounded by a way you will understand I will be happy to do so and can draw diagrams to explain the electrical conduction of the heart and exactly what cause SVT. However I would not be able to email diagrams to you via Yahoo. I would need to have your email address to do that so it is entirely up to you.

Whatever you settle on I will be happy to help you if you ever need me.

in a basic nut shell it means the heart is hiding to fast to let the pumping chamber of the heart to completely fill beside blood to make it a good pump. There for it is making her fill vile. There are medications that can treat this. Yes it would freak anyone out and she has just rights to touch anxious, but anxiety does make it worse. The best thing you can do is help her through it and agree to her know how important it is to follow directions of medications provided by the doctor. stay away from caffeine or any stimulants for that matter. The electrical stuff is the brain of the system but the drive she is symptomatic with the SVT is, well think of a turkey baster if you don't squeeze it slow and fully it doesn't pump correct does it. very soon try for one minute to squeeze it all the way 60 times in own minute in a minute try 300 in one minute. how much liquid were you competent to displace. Get the idea now. To fast to be adjectives. In the long run this will also cause the heart muscle to enlarge and make even less of a suitable pump.

The quick tricks listed above are to invoke a vagal response, have her grunt close to she needs to have a poop, same thing, Source(s): Nurse- Cardiac critical perfectionism 10 years
Supraventricular tachycardia is an unusually rapid rhythm of the heart, due to a problem in the AV node, which propogates electrical impulse through the heart.

Although it can be damaging to a physically demanding lifestyle, supraventricular tachycardia is not a fatal disorder. Medications can be administered to reduce or stamp out symptoms.
Irregular heartbeat Source(s): I have it while giving birth to Emily via c-section.
Not sure about the first bit but Tachycardia refers to a rapid heart rhythm.
she's ok there Niagra.

EDIT: Stuffed if i know mate but it seems the guy below me has well-mannered copy and paste skills. What he wrote is driectly from Wiki.
ymptoms occur or if you have another heart disorders, treatment may be necessary.
If you own an episode of PSVT, a technique called the Valsalva maneuver can be used to interrupt the fast heartbeat. Hold your breath and strain, as if you were trying to enjoy a bowel movement, or cough while sitting with your upper body bent forward.
Splashing ice water on the frontage has been reported by some people as willing.
Emergency treatment of PSVT may include:
* Medicines through a capillary, including adenosine and verapamil. Other medications may be used, such as procainamide, beta-blockers, and propafenone.
Long-term treatment of PSVT may include:
* Daily medications such as propafenone, flecainide, moricizine, sotalol, and amiodarone.
* Pacemakers to override the fast heartbeat; severely occasionally used in children with PSVT who have not responded to any other treatment.
* Surgery to switch the pathways in the heart that send electrical signals; this may be recommended contained by some cases for people who need other heart surgery. Source(s): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supraventri…

hmmmm that would be a scary thing to shift through for her as well as you.....but I agree with Maz, you have some pretty honourable answers up there that should make you both feel better,
It's annoying being dizzy, tired, and short of breath all the time from it, but it's nothing too serious. So don't madness! It's nothing to panic over.
My cardiologist said a way to create the episode stop, is to crunch up in a ball, and push down really hard approaching you're having a bowel movement. That would sometimes help for me.

Good luck to your daughter! Source(s): Personal experience
sorry honey i have no idea and if the dr doesn't then perchance shes in a bit of trouble

but you just described my symptoms when i left the pub on fri dark
Supra=above
ydardia= too-rapid heartbeat.

Dizzy spells for years is serious business for a 16-year old. My limited medical familiarity say that alpha and beta-blockers might be needed to slow down the heartbeat. That would be Tenormin, labetolol, cardura, metoprolol, etc.,--that category of possible prescriptions. Let the doctors find out and prescribe accordingly.
I'll have to 'guess' this one,, but I'd say-so that Supraventricular means Lesser Vascular or Mild Vein System?? & Tachycardia means Tachy I have No Idea, but Cardia funds Heart or of the Heart. "JUST GUESSING",,, so put it together & it would mean some problem of the veins leading to the heart but of a minor nature. ..... But I am ONLY "GUESSING"! Please listen to someone else. Good Luck.
