Heart attack followed by Cardiac arrest followed by a Coma/Stupor?

My brother in law 42 years old have had a massive heart attack followed by cardiac arrest followed by a Coma/Stupor. He has been within this condition for 100 hours now. The doctors first said Coma and now say Stupor.
What is the difference between Coma and Stupor and what is the prognosis? He have hardly responded except for a flicker of the eye on one day and a slight arm movement on another day.
y gives you an excellent answer...

Time is what is needed immediately...after cardiac arrest patients can be put into a drug induced coma and also "cooled" under a special blanket as this allows the body to rest and allow healing to happen. Source(s): I've have 3 cardiac arrests.
Coma ability a state of profound unconsciousness from which the patient cannot be aroused, even by a powerful stimuli.
se note that the brain may sustain harmed after the blood flow has been stopped for about four minutes and irreversible plunder after about seven minutes. Source(s): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coma

Did you tight: in a stupor
Stupor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stupor is the lack of critical cognitive function and level of consciousness wherein a sufferer is almost entirely unresponsive and lone responds to base stimuli such as pain. The word derives from the Latin stupure, meaning insensible.
er - 7 definition - its actually a state of mind usually associated with being drunk ... A stuper conspicuously displays an extreme shortage of depth; one who possesses no sensitivity, wisdom, shrewdness or deep thought.

coma is a full unconscience state. stupor can respond to the basic of attitude, sense of pain gets a reaction. Not one totally unconscience, or in a coma would be someone in a stupor.
Stupor is better than coma. In a coma, there is no motor response. It is very rock-hard to give you a true prognosis without knowing the case surrounded by full. Like how long was he down during the cardiac arrest, was he oxygenated quickly ample, etc. The fact that he has progressed from a coma is a positive sign but I don't want to give you false hope. His doctors are the singular ones who can give you a likely prognosis.

t, let's start with definition -
Stupor is unresponsiveness from which a person can be aroused only by vigorous, physical stimulation. Coma is unresponsiveness from which a human being cannot be aroused.

ost cases, brain cells begin to die after three minutes without oxygen. Permanent brain disfavour happens after anywhere from 5-8 minutes. The times differ because other things, like temperature, affect how promptly brain cells die.
What your brother-in-law's prognosis is depends on how long he was without oxygen. There may still be a make over in his brain function because after a brain injury (which is another way of describing the fact that brain cell were dying) the brain swells. I would imagine that he is on medication to reduce the brain swelling, resembling steroids, or diuretics.
When the swelling is gone, the docs will be able to give you a clearer indication of prognosis. You may want to ask if they have done an EEG, which shows electrical movement in the brain, or a cerebral blood flow study, which measures how well blood is circulating to the brain. If they enjoy done these, ask for an explanation of the results.
I wish you and your family the best. Hang in near. Source(s): RN
