Should I alteration my medication because of side effects?

I take Abilify for a certain disorder. It is the best medication I have ever taken, and it really works correct. The side effects, however, are apparent. The pills have so far made me gain four inches on my waist. I know this because when I am not taking it, I loose four inches on my waist. Also, These pills have be known to cause diabetes, in some cases, and my medical doctor said that I am already a borderline diabetic. I dream up that it is because of the pills, but I have so far controlled it with diet and exercise. These pills have also be known to cause blood clots in elder patients which is very dangerous for causing heart attack and stroke, so what do you suppose?
