Can epileptics provide blood?
I was wondering if anyone knows if an epileptic can donate blood. I'm not really sure why I'm questioning this, but I've other wondered. Any ideas? Thanks
Answers: I deliberate it would depend on the drugs you are taking (some of them can cause foetal abnormalities for example) and whether your seizures be well controlled. In some cases they may be able to use your blood in other ways, especially if you hold a rare blood group, but the decision will be on a case by travel case basis.
Of course they can. It wouldn't harm the creature with epilepsy nor the recipient of their blood.

This site should be helpful. It has you answer a series of questions to facilitate determine if you can give blood. One question that came up be "Do you have a serious illness that you take regular medication for?"
I answered yes to see what would be said, and the website asked me to phone the helpline for further info:

Well I'm epileptic and when 18 I tried to give blood and they told me I couldn't
1) the blood taking process can sometimes (though rarely) cause a fit
When I go to give blood "Are you epileptic" was one of the questions the nurses asked me, so I don't suggest it was just that nurse. According to the red cross USA this isn't the case as long as you've be fit free for the last 6 months... In the UK the case is different and some epilepsy drugs are not permitted when giving blood!
No we are not allowed to give blood - I be a Blood Donor type O Neg which is much prized. Since I developed Epilepsy 6 years ago I have not been allowed to donate - I am on medication. Source(s): Former Blood Donor
