How to stay safe and sound from radon poisoning?

I have lived in my home for 15 years. in our crypt is radon. i do not know how much radon there is but we installed a radon mitigation about 15 years ago. do you think that it will still be working? and if not will I gain lung cancer from the radon if I spend around 10-12 hours in the basement daily?
