Can I hold Thyroid supplements while on Synthroid?
I have Hosimotos Hypothyroid. I have read that L-Tyrosine and iodine help for Thyroid function. Will taking these supplements effect how my thyroid medication works? With is grant me too much T-4.?
Answers: You are already on a "thyroid supplement" - Synthroid. It's the best thyroid supplement near is, because it's straight thyroid hormone. It doesn't have to be converted by your damaged thyroid. You need to stay on it, and merely it, at the dose prescribed by your doctor. Otherwise, you blood tests will be messed up and you won't know if you are on the right dose.
lthwind is partially correct. Armour Thyroid or Nature-throid or Westhroid are the best for treatments of Hashimoto's. I've have Hashimoto's for decades. Synthroid didn't help. But taking iodine and other over-the-counter supplements that say they are helpful to the thyroid can really rumple how your medication works.
I suggest you read the book, "Living Well with Hypothyroidism" by Mary J. Shomon. It's an easy book to read and you will learn deeply about your Hashimoto's. This book really helped me. You can get it contained by any book store. If they don't have it, have them order it for you. Or you can proclaim it online at Amazon.com real cheap if you buy a used copy. You can read about Hashimotos thyroiditis here:

hroid is a synthetic T4 drug which really isn't the best thing to take or Hashimotos. The aspiration with treating Hashis is to get your TPO (Thyroid Peroxidase) antibodies to stop attacking your thyroid.
How to do this is by blocking the thyroid from producing thyroid hormones which in turn will stop the antibodies from attacking. It's individual possible to do this with natural thyroid, also known as desiccated (dried) porcine thyroid. Brand name are Naturethroid, Armour, Thyroid-S, Thyroid USP, Thyroid extract, etc. It is dosed 'up' according to symptoms returning, until a full replacement dose has been attained (when symptoms no longer return). It's also VERY important to properly test/treat adrenals: http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/adr…
Also to appropriate something to help reduce antibodies, like selenium/magnesium.
