Despite what you may have heard on popular medium like 'one flew over the cuckoo's nest', ECT is scientifically proven to be an effective treated for mental disorders that, for whatever pretext, are not helped by conventional medication. From what i have heard (i'm no doctor) the treatment is impressive and anesthetic would definitely be used if the procedure was painful.
