"Passive Smoking" whilst at work?
I am a palliative (end of life) Nurse. I attend to people in their own homes once a terminal prognosis has be given. My Company has given me a new patient who is dying from lung cancer. I am near him from 10pm to 7am. Last night was my first shift. In the first 30 min's I was within, he smoked 6 cigarettes. Once I had administered medications he went to bed. Woke an hour latter, got up and had 5 cigarettes. At 4.50am he was up again and tie up smoked another 7 before I left. His flat is TINY and is open plan kitchen/living space. His philosophy is, as he is dying anyway (aged 53) he will transport on. I DO NOT SMOKE! I do not want to smoke his fags! The point is in my job, can I be that discriminatory even though smoking in the (my) "workplace" is Government barred? I WILL say to my office that I am only prepared to Nurse him ONE hours of darkness shift per week because of the chain smoking scenario, but ethically I am torn.
Answers: Your workplace is his home and he should be allowed to do as he pleases, maybe he does not like a non smoker in the house but does he have a choice? As a retired nurse I voice everyone has a right to the best treatment regardless of who or what they are or what they may be doing, if you cannot accept a persons right to live as they choose and put yourself second next maybe you should change jobs. The patients wishes and wants and well being should other come first regardless of risks to self.
ou want to protect yourself could you not wear a mask? Source(s): 40 years of nursing
Open some windows and throw away his fags.
Tell him you hate to see him doing this to himself and that you are his friend and you like him (in a friend means of access of course) and you want him to stop for his benefit.
Maybe a sedative? to get him through the night i guessm so he will not get up to smoke. Tell your boss about this problem and ask for some advice on how to handle it.
Good Luck
Wow that's a tough one. You can hardly stop the man smoking in his own home and I can understand why you don't want to sign up in with him - it must be a very unpleasant atmosphere. Can't they find someone who smokes to do this employment? You could get an air filter to at least muffle the amount of smoke and have all the windows approachable but neither seems a satisfactory solution. Or maybe you could wear a frontage mask (one designed to eliminate toxic stuff not just a composition one) but then they are very uncomfortable and hot. Hope you find a process of dealing with it.
You should talk with your boss and explain that you can't be around that much smoke, within must be a nurse who smokes and won't mind it.

As if your job isn't hard satisfactory already. I think you're making a very valid and reasonable point in fact. I know it's sad and he has given up on his life, and doesn't trouble anymore, but that shouldn't mean that you have to inhale such strong cigarette smoke for however many night. hhmmm! Talk to your company and ask if you can share this with someone else. Would he object if you at least open a window?
Good luck and stand up for yourself! You shouldn't have to deal next to that. Ffs, they won't allow bar staff to inhale second hand smoke... so why you when you're doing such a valuable duty. It's a tough one because this man should be allowed to live out his last weeks/months as he pleases... still though... is there no nurses that smoke.... maybe they wouldn't mind so much. Source(s): giving up cigarettes from today!! yay!! desire me luck!
common i work in exactness and you cant deny him his smoke! he is dying he has nothing to live for so you could walk outside while he is smoking or you are within the wrong profession!! they smoke it is their choise as my seinor tells me it is their choise to live in a tip then explicitly their choise they have the right in their own home to live as they please after all that is to say their house! you should speak to your superior about it and they may send you to places who are non smoking otherwise get out you own the qualifications now go to a hospital!!
Why subject yourself to his smoking at adjectives? You should ask your workplace for non-smokers only. After-all... if he inhales, you do also. Even if only for one night shift per week will hold adverse consequences to you later down the road.
That's interesting and i bet relatives like you were not considered when the ban come into force.
