Answers: Could be all sorts of things, infections would be the most common. My brother had a coughing spell which the GP put down to an anaesthetic and coming into close contact next to my mum's cat. He had a course of chromoglycate (I think; it happened a dutiful few years ago) which brought it under control.
Hope he get better soon
Does your dad have any other health related problems, close to liver disease, or heart problems?.... Does his feet swell at night?...some times there can be fluid surrounded by the lungs,?..
Another possibility would be, if he has been exposed to dust, or mold, or coal dust, lead or exposed to spray paint..or any other toxic particle...as this could have caused some damage to the lungs.
I found this article, I read it and found it rather interesting. Not to terrify you, but it sounds like it could be Tuberculosis, if its not going away.
My grandad was found to have a shadow on his lung after coughing.
He hasn't really be noticably effected, but i think they expect it to progressively worsen as he ages.
