Need Some Tips on Barre Chords?

Im learning, and I know practice is the key. But, I just don't see how I can do it if I've positioned my finger surrounded by every possibly way and still can't do it through frets 4-5. Do I need to build up a calluses on the side of my index finger as resourcefully?
